Help my jeep will not start - Jeep Cherokee Trouble Shooting

If you fall at the start into two categories:

1) The motor stops spinning - the starter is not running

Jump Starter

O

2) The engine turns over the fire, but not run.

This article deals with the root cause. If you turn the engine failed to start, but see my other items.

Start by checking the battery voltage. Most of the jeep have a voltmeter on the dashboard. the voltage is low - less than 10 volts, check the following:

1. Fist check if there is ato discharge the battery. If the light? Doors left open or draining the power of other accessories to the left? If so, you want to start using jumper cables and exhaust with a charged battery from another vehicle.
2. If there was no discharge excess energy, check the status of the battery cable. Remove the wire from the battery and clean the contacts. Also check the connection of ground wires to the vehicle frame.
3. If the battery cables are clean andgood contact and the voltage is still low, if the alternator is working properly.
4. If the battery does not start after the Jeep to replace the battery.

If the battery voltage is normal, but still the engine does not turn, is the most common cause of security locks. On automatic transmission is a neutral safety switch (NSS), which only has permission to start the engine in neutral or park. can corrode the contacts of the switch and run the NSSmalfunction. Move the switch back and forth as you get the key. Often through movement and place the switch still works. The NSS can be disassembled and cleaned or simply replaced by a new unit.

If the NSS is working correctly, but the starter still does not turn, you may have a faulty starter or starter. The starter and solenoid valve are replaced as a unit on the Cherokee XJ. But as a starter before purchase of replacement, check the wiring on theStarter and trigger wire to the magnet. Often these connections can come loose or contaminated by the rigors of off-road driving. Some people have reported that starter disassembled and cleaned in order to solve problems, but I have not tried this method.

How do you replace the starter on a Jeep Cherokee

The Jeep Cherokee starter sometimes fail with very little warning. I've had in the store parking lots, driveways and the first change in recent times my son's house. With this simple method you can use the Jeep running again soon and possibly avoid towing bill.

For most people, there is plenty of room to access the starter without jacking up the jeep. In fact, it makes it easier for jacking the past starting in the control group during the removalfrom the engine compartment.

Jump Starter

Remove the negative battery cable

Remove 8MM mother that the trigger wire to the starter magnet holds.

Remove the lower mounting screw. Note: This is a SAE bolt with 9 / 16, the head. They range from the front of the starter.

Remove the top bolt. It is 15 mm head, which runs from the transmission side metric.

Remove the starter enough to reduce and remove the battery cable from the terminal. This is a 13mm.

To install the newStarter, install the battery cable in place and move the trigger wire from the street.

Place the starter so that the indices in the hole of the base. Start the clamp bolt not more. This metric is the shortest.

Start the bottom bolt (SAE older) and ensure that the goodwill properly aligned with the hole in the base. Tighten the screws.

Connect the cable switch and tighten the nut.

Replace the battery.

After all thatis back in place, you can turn the key and start the Jeep. Be sure to reset the clock and radio presets that is lost to remove the battery.
